The Culture of Patient Safety
Emily E. Volk, MD started her anatomic and clinical pathology residency as anticipated, learning how to read glass slides and do autopsies. As Dr. Volk continued her career in the clinical pathology arena she became more involved in blood banking, and discovered something that made her stand up and take notice, the deadliness of human error.
"I think that was a real eye opener for me – that human error was the cause of death, much more commonly than a virus or some kind of bacterial infection, and I think that resonated with me and I’m sure I’m not alone. Once you realize how deadly human error is, you stand up and take notice.”
- Emily Volk, MD
Earlier this year, Dr. Volk promoted the culture of patient safety at CAP’11, THE Pathologists’ MeetingTM, urging pathologists to take the lead on patient safety. Dr. Volk explained to the audience how Baptist Health System in San Antonio, Texas, where she is Medical Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, is making a difference with patient safety and blood management initiatives.
Strategic Healthcare Group had the opportunity to talk in-depth with Dr. Volk about her personal experiences in patient safety. She shared her inspirations, views, and recommendations on the culture of patient safety and how Strategic Healthcare Group has been beneficial in the process.
